Welcome from the Executive Director for Children and Young People

Thank you for your interest in this critical leadership role. I am delighted that you are considering applying to join us.

Across the partnership, our collective ambition for our children and young people knows no bounds. Our children's life-chances and choices depend on all of us working together to make the difference. If successful, you would be joining a mature and strong Children and Young People's Partnership where colleagues in every sector are committed to working together for all of our children and young people.

This is an exciting time to join Lewisham. Overall, our Children’s Services are rated as ‘performing excellently’. Our borough is diverse and vibrant as well as challenging. Under the leadership of Alastair Pettigrew, our Children’s Social Care services have come a long way over the last five years. You can be confident of the support of elected members as well as the Partnership in safeguarding our children. We are proud to have a stable workforce at both front line and managerial levels and one of the lowest levels of agency staff in the capital. We are committed to investing in our high quality, committed staff to ensure our recruitment and retention remain strong. Our flat management structure and small teams have led to some particularly high performing services and of course Lewisham is well known for its excellent relationships with its partners, across CAMHS, the PCT, CAFCASS, the police and the hospital as well as with schools and the third sector. Our commitment to integrated working is very strong, with a purpose built facility co-locating all staff from across the Partnership who work with our children with complex needs, providing a one-stop shop for parents and their children.

But there is still so much to do to ensure our most vulnerable children and young people are consistently served well by us and their life chances maximised. We are looking for someone who relishes challenge and who can provide strong leadership not only in the services for which they are directly responsible but also right across the borough, spanning professional disciplines and organisations, putting our children first, every time. You will have the freedom to be creative in your approaches and to use your experience to find innovative ways to make the difference.

I hope you enjoy reading our 2009-12 Children and Young People's Plan which sets out our aspirations in more detail.

If you have the passion and insight to take us forward to our next stage of improvement and are as excited as we are about the possibilities ahead of us, we would very much like to hear from you.
